Richmond Hill, GA – Richmond Hill Public Library received a check for $3,500 on Monday on behalf of the local non-profit organization Richmond Hill Friends of the Library.

More commonly referred to as simply ‘Friends of the Library’, this Richmond Hill-based non-profit organization was originally founded in 1988 and reached 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status several years ago.

The mission of this all-volunteer organization is “supporting the library in whatever way possible, especially financially, and advocating for literary throughout the South Bryan County area.

When not presenting the library with generous contributions, these volunteers can be found sorting and pricing books and setting up for book sales which are held 6 times a year in the odd numbered months (January, March, May, etc.).

This $3,500 contribution is specifically earmarked for large print and best seller volumes, as these are not covered in the current county budget. Since the beginning of 2017, Friends of the Library has donated over $22,700 directly to the library (including this amount) using funds raised from book sale events. They also regularly support the summer reading program, provide magnets and bookmarks, and purchase other needed items such as games, a vacuum cleaner, and a dehumidifier.

When discussions first started about building a new library in South Bryan County, Friends of the Library pledged $20,000 towards those efforts. The funds have successful been raised and they will make this contribution once construction of the new library begins.

Friends of the Library always welcomes new members. Dues are $20 for individuals, $30 for families, and $50 for businesses. Volunteers for the book sales are also greatly appreciated to help with setting up, selling, and breaking down after the sale. The next book sale will be this Saturday, September 14th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

If you would like to become a Friend of the Library, membership forms are available in the library near the front desk where our for sale books are located. Just fill out the form and leave it with a check in the money box. Alternatively, you can join during any book sale – just ask!

After moving to Richmond Hill, GA in the fall of 2018, Matt wanted to become immediately involved in the community. Without hesitation, he created the Richmond Hill Community Facebook group which reached 2,700 members in just 5 months. After building this community, he decided they needed an honest, reliable news source to keep them informed. Thus, Richmond Hill 411 was born!
